The United Kingdom is now investing £300 million to produce a nuclear fuel designed to power the latest generation of reactors, in a fresh bid to hinder Russia’s current dominance in the world energy market.

At present, high-assay, low-enriched uranium, also known as Hale, is only commercially produced in Russia. To rival this, the UK government funding will be deployed to produce the fuel domestically for use in the most advanced nuclear reactors.

According to Britain’s Secretary for Energy Security, Claire Coutinho, the new UK-based initiative programme could supply the cutting-edge reactor fuel to countries all over the world.

A joint statement from Net Zero and the UK’s Department for Energy Security added that a further £10 million worth of investment will also be provided to help develop the sites and skills required to produce other types of advanced nuclear fuels in Britain.

It is the government’s hope that the move, which will focus on building domestic capability through uranium enrichment and fuel fabrication works based in northwest England, will aid the UK in securing a long-term domestic supply of nuclear fuel.

Ms Coutinho commented:

“This will be critical for energy security at home and abroad, and builds on Britain’s historic competitive advantages.”
