The River Severn Partnership Advanced Wireless Innovation Region (RSPAWIR) has announced a £100,000 Grant Fund for businesses and the voluntary sector in the Severn Catchment Area.
The program is being managed by Shropshire Council and funded by central government. It is part of a more expansive £3.75m project whose focus is to help businesses and organisations embrace advanced wireless connectivity technology.
According to Shropshire Council, wireless technology is a vital resource, which enables local individuals, businesses and organisations to gain critical access to financial services, e-commerce, healthcare and education – not only boosting regional prosperity, but also enhancing the quality of life.
Each grant will total £5,000 each in order to assist in the purchase and installation of wireless technologies. Overall, more than £36m is being invested across the UK.
To qualify for the grant, applicants must have been operating for more than 12 months in agriculture, water management or the public sector. The grants cover total costs of up to 75% for commercial projects, and 90% for voluntary social enterprise organisations.
The RSPAWIR is currently collaborating with Hartpury University and Cranfield University on innovative agricultural projects, to show how advanced wireless technology can help rural businesses and improve environmental outcomes.
Working closely with farmers in the River Severn Partnership area, they aim to demonstrate how advanced wireless technologies can be used to regulate energy usage, monitor crops, and increase security. One pioneering project near Telford monitors and regulates water flow in the area’s rivers and tributaries.
