New figures show that the UK battery electric vehicle market enjoyed its best month ever in September.

For people investment planning in Cheshire and the automotive industry, over 72,000 battery electric (BEV) models were registered during this period. This was equivalent to 23.3% of all sold vehicles. It amounted to a 29% increase on the 56,000 BEVs sold in September 2024.

The Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) claims there are different factors at play. In 2025, there is a much wider range of brands and products in this market segment. There is also the government’s £650 million Electric Car Grant scheme, which was launched in the summer. That offers discounts of anywhere up to £3,650 and covers 36 different electric models. So far, around 20,000 drivers have taken advantage of the scheme.

In September, just over half of 312,887 newly registered vehicles were classified as either electric or hybrid types. In total, the new vehicle market was up by nearly 14% on the previous year. The SMMT said that this was the overall motor industry’s best September performance since 2020. Under current rules, manufacturers were obligated to set an EV battery-only or hybrid target of 28% this year.

SMMT CEO Mike Hawes said that electrified vehicles are taking off across the UK, thanks to huge investment and added incentives for consumers. As such, the electric car industry is on course to meet its environmental targets, whilst appealing to a broader pool of drivers.
