Supply company announces £500 million North West water investment

Leading water supply company United Utilities (UU) has announced a huge investment in water infrastructure in the North West.

If you are investment planning in Cheshire, UU confirmed that it is teaming up with 30 companies based or operating in the region to work on the project, which is still subject to regulatory approval.

UU was founded in 1995, following the merger of NORWEB and North West Water, and is the largest listed water company in the UK. It manages regulated water and wastewater across the North West region, including most of Cheshire. It currently supplies water to approximately 7.3 million people in this part of England.

The 30 construction firms comprise 20 local civils-based experts, and a further 10 electrical and mechanical specialists tasked with working on UU’s minor works framework. If it gets the go ahead, it will be the region’s largest investment in water infrastructure in over 100 years – a major plank in the company’s ambitious 2025-2030 business plans.

Core objectives include work on smaller, county schemes, such as building solutions to boost the company’s Better Rivers scheme, while standardising the network, enhancing process treatment facilities and providing storm overflow solutions.

UU’s Capital Delivery Director, Jane Simpson, said that the company’s objectives go beyond infrastructure improvements. She said it was also seeking to grow businesses, build up local apprenticeships and skills academies and provide new career opportunities. As a result, the region will be left “stronger, greener and healthier”.
