Multi-million-pound grant for Cheshire recycling facility approved

There has been an interesting development for anyone investment planning in Cheshire with an eye on its flourishing green sector.

Ellesmere Port is to benefit from an 81,107 square feet plant at Protos Plastic Park in Ince Marshes. A brand-new recycling facility is to be installed, which specialises in waste plastics.

The facility is host to Enviroo, a specialist polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling firm. It takes PET, the primary material used in food and drink packaging (for example, plastic bottles) and converts it into polymers, which are used to create new food packaging items.

The site is predicted to process up to 35,000 tonnes of plastic per annum, generating around 80 full time jobs and £4.5 million GVA (gross value added) for the local economy, while also drawing in private sector investment estimated at over £57 million.

The facility is also looking to create an additional 19 indirect supply chain jobs and a further 83 during construction.

The funding is being supported by Enterprise Cheshire and Warrington in conjunction with business and local authorities in the area: Warrington Borough Council, Cheshire West and Chester Council and Cheshire East Council. They all share the common goal of building the most sustainable growing economy in the country. The grant allocation dovetails with the Government’s endorsement of Cheshire as a major clean energy growth region.

The North West Net Zero Industrial Cluster plan facilitates a £30 billion suite of green ‘clean energy’ projects. These are designed to remove in excess of 40 million tonnes of carbon, while creating and guaranteeing employment in the process.
