The Government recently announced a major £4 billion investment. A deal with Kuala Lumpur based conglomerate YTL Corporation was confirmed as Sir Keir Starmer met with Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim to officially launch the brownfield scheme.
It is expected to deliver a state-of-the-art 19,000 capacity arena, exhibition and conferencing space in Filton at the site of the former Concorde aircraft hangars. The area will host a variety of different events including theatre, music, sport and comedy.
YTL confirmed that circa £2 billion of the investment is earmarked for a new town called Brabazon, which will be located on the 380-acre site, one of the largest brownfield developments in the UK. The rest of the money will be invested in YTL’s UK businesses over the next five years.
Having originally acquired the airfield and hangars in 2016, YTL secured planning approval in November 2024 to build the YTL Arena Complex. This development will comprise 6,500 homes in addition to 2,000 student beds, three new schools, three hotels, a new railway station and a retirement village. There will also be 60 acres of commercial development, which will be focused on aerospace, high end technology and university facilities.
The Government welcomed the deal with the Business and Trade Secretary, Jonathan Reynolds, emphasising its merits. In a statement, he affirmed that it was incredible news for the UK and that it would lead to generational transformation, delivering new infrastructure, jobs, homes and schools.
If you are investment planning in Oswestry or Cheshire, this could come as major news.
