If you are investment planning in Cheshire’s green economy, recycling giant Novelis is upgrading its capacity at the Latchford plant on Thelwell Lane.
The Atlanta-based aluminium recycling and rolling company has unveiled a $90 million plan to double the facility’s annual recycling capacity by 85,000 metric tonnes per year.
The investment will cover the installation of a new dross house and a further three new bag houses, as well as the construction of state-of-the-art sorting, shredding, melting and de-coating technologies.
It is envisaged these will enable the plant to recycle new types of aluminium scrap at a higher volume, while increasing operational efficiency.
Novelis Europe are predicting this expansion of recycling capacity, enhanced by advanced technologies, will lead to an annual CO2e reduction of in excess of 350.000 tonnes. The project is scheduled to start commissioning in December 2026. Upon completion, it is anticipated that the facility will have the capacity to recycle 100 percent of used beverage cans (UBC) accumulated under the UK’s deposit return scheme. As a result, a local, fully circular system will take effect that negates the need to export scrap overseas.
Allan Sweeney, the plant manager of Novelis Latchford, said that the investment will consolidate the company’s position as the leading aluminium recycler in the UK. Due to technological advances, his team will now be able to recycle all variants of UBC scrap, resulting in low-carbon products that not only drive their own sustainability goals, but those of their customers, too.
