A golden age for Cheshire’s nuclear sector

The Northwest is rapidly turning into a nuclear powerhouse. If you are investment planning in Cheshire and the surrounding areas, the nuclear industry is predicting spectacular 49% growth in the sector by 2030.

The primary hub is in Warrington, where Birchwood Park, a global pioneer of nuclear energy, has created a name for itself as the foundation of the region’s nuclear industry.

It is home to more than 40 businesses in the area including many prestige names such as Rolls-Royce, Cavendish Nuclear, Amentum, NNL and Nuvia. They all have expertise in different aspects of nuclear innovation, specifically new build and decommissioning, as well as advanced nuclear tech such as small modular reactor development.

Both the civil and defence industries are taking on thousands more staff with the Nuclear Skills Delivery Group (NSDG), reporting substantial growth in nuclear sector employment this year.

The latest data from the 2024 Northern Nuclear Alliance (NNA) shows significant 16% growth across the Cheshire and Warrington areas, with the total number of jobs rising from 5,838 in 2023 to 6,771 in 2024.

The NNA has said that this growth in recruitment is a reflection of the Northwest’s world-class reputation within the nuclear industry, with the region able to attract investment on the strength of its specialist knowledge and infrastructure, particularly at Birchwood Park.

The site is developing state-of-the-art facilities in a bid to meet the UK’s nuclear generation goals and offers a range of careers and apprenticeships in its quest for further growth.
