UK recognised as global pioneer in Quantum technologies

If you are investment planning in Cheshire or the wider UK, the National Quantum Technologies Programme (NQTP) is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month with a Showcase event in London.

The UK National Quantum Technologies Showcase 2024 brings together government, investors, academics and industry professionals as well as overseas companies and investors, and will be anticipating the next phase for the industry. This is following the announcement of five new Quantum Research Hubs by the Government, in addition to a further £160 million of investment.

The Hubs’ primary aim is to maximise the benefits of quantum technologies in areas such as computing, healthcare, critical infrastructure and national security. This emerging industry has exceeded all expectations in recent years, generating over £1 billion in public investment, and the UK has established a reputation as a world leader for creating companies specialising in quantum computing, imaging, sensing and networking.

As well as attracting investment, the Quantum industry has also created highly skilled jobs alongside a portfolio of related services and new products. These include healthcare, with the rollout of Quantum brain scanners, and in green industries, with cameras able to detect greenhouse gases.

The NQTP was originally launched back in 2014, jointly financed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Ministry of Defence and National Physical Laboratory, as well other government agencies.

Roger McKinlay, who works on Quantum Technologies for Innovate UK, said that the latest Showcase is the biggest to date, and will demonstrate how it is ‘industries not inventions’ that change lives.
