New link road approved for Ellesmere Business Park

Plans have been approved for a new link road in Ellesmere.

The 0.8-mile road will connect Canal Way and the Ellesmere Business Park roundabout, which the developers Burbury Investments anticipate will open up the southwest of the town, down to the Shropshire Union Canal.

According to Shropshire Council’s planning department, the road will be vital to securing different types of developments around the town and to Ellesmere’s longer-term social, economic and environmental viability.

Outline planning consent was originally granted in 2016 for proposals to include 250 new homes, a leisure complex and a hotel. However, a later detail application was rejected due in part to the lack of a link road plan.

In 2021, the applicant required a piece of land close to the Ellesmere Business Park roundabout, enabling the link road to be delivered. Most of that land is set aside for housing, with two separate developments creating around 500 new homes between them, alongside an extra care facility and space for holiday cabins and caravans.

The approved planning conditions will see changes to signals and road markings at the Canal Way and Scotland Street junction. These are to ensure it is fit for purpose and ready for the extra traffic created by future developments.

The mixed-use scheme will also feature footpaths and cycle access. Ellesmere Town Council and Ellesmere Rural Parish Council are both backing the project.
