Cheshire set for first AI-powered coffee shop

The North West could soon see its first AI (artificial intelligence)-powered drive-through coffee shop.

If you are investment planning in Cheshire, you may be interested to know that the plans have been included in proposals by property firm WUKPG, which have identified a site off Chester Way in Northwich.

The £12 million project features a five-storey facility, co-working space and self-storage areas, as well as a drive-through that has been pioneered by UK start-up Bocca Felice. The facility space would amount to 5,797 square metres, marketed under the Shutter Store banner.

The company has plans to open at least 22 stores around the country this year, with a view to opening 80 by the close of 2026. The artificial intelligence element would involve natural language processing capable of interpreting human language. Bocca Felice claims its system currently guarantees 98% accuracy. At their peak, it is envisaged the coffee shops could produce 350 drinks per hour, which is roughly 20 times more than a conventional coffee machine. If approved, it is hoped the Northwich development will boost local employment, additionally providing extra indoor and outdoor amenities for customers.

Ever since the produce was first cultivated, the coffee industry has been constantly evolving, with the next phase of innovation relying on AI and robotics to drive change. This technological transformation has seen more businesses invest in AI to optimise operational efficiency and improve customer experiences. This reflects a move away from traditional coffee services towards a more dynamic and data-driven approach, and aims to set new industry standards by enhancing customer interaction and boosting quality control.
