Those investment planning in Oswestry may be interested to know that a metal manufacturer in Shropshire is expanding its workforce.
The company, Bridgnorth Aluminium, is increasing its staff by 10 to 330. Its 66-acre site in Shropshire plays host to the only metallurgy laboratories and development and aluminium research facilities in the UK. In terms of flat rolled aluminium coils, it is the country’s only fully integrated producer.
It is one of a number of firms taking part at UK Metals Expo 2025 in Birmingham. Different companies and trade organisations are lobbying the Government to recognise the vital role of the aluminium industry in defence, aerospace, automotive and energy. The Aluminium Federation said it was incumbent on the UK to defend the aluminium sector at a time when its future has been complicated by transatlantic tariff disputes. UK aluminium exports are currently subject to a 25% tax in the US.
The Government carried out a consultation earlier this year, the result of which approximately £2.5 billion of public funds was allocated to the steel industry. Bridgnorth Aluminium is calling on the Government to throw its support behind the aluminium industry in the same way it backs steel.
Will aluminum attract similar levels of support?
The company says it is a profitable business but has fallen behind other industries in investment. To meet the challenges of the future, it is busy making its manufacturing operation more sustainable, while diversifying into new markets.
Investment in the British aluminium sector is primarily focused on boosting infrastructure, pursuing net-zero targets and the transition to electric vehicles.
