Brownlee brothers’ initiative to help young people save money

Brothers Jonny and Alistair Brownlee are no strangers to helping each other through adverse triathlon conditions. However, the two Olympians now have turned their attention to helping others through a different kind of challenge.

In conjunction with NatWest, the two brothers have launched a new initiative focused on money management, aimed at helping young people build a lifetime of positive savings habits. This follows findings published by NatWest which shows that around a quarter of people under 35 have saved less than £500.

The ‘Couch to Cash: the £5K Challenge’ initiative is designed to encourage young people to build savings habits each month, by setting a savings goal of say £5,000, and then providing useful tools to help boost their account, including a spending round-up feature and budgeting tips. The Brownlee brothers claim that people can start out with small amounts, gradually building a pot over time. They liken this to race training conditions where preparation starts slowly before gradually accumulating speed and distance.

There is clearly an appetite for new savings strategies, and as many as 72% of those surveyed indicated that a new approach might help them realise their money goals. At present, just over a third of young people find themselves saving towards long-term objectives, but the NatWest data also identified 22% earmarking funds for investment whilst 24% were looking to use their savings to launch a future business.
